music group
The Strokes
New York rock band formed in the late 1990s whose 2001 debut album Is This It became a defining reference point for the early-2000s guitar-music revival.
Overview
The Strokes
The group — Julian Casablancas, Albert Hammond Jr., Nick Valensi, Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti — developed in New York before the rapid international impact of Is This It in 2001. Their stripped-back sound, styling and photography became closely connected to the visual mythology of turn-of-the-millennium downtown New York.
Why it matters
Within TMR, The Strokes connect music, fashion, photography and magazine culture, particularly the renewed interest in deliberately raw rock imagery in the early 2000s.
