Biography
Person.
Sarah Morris is an American artist whose paintings and films examine the structures of contemporary urban life. Born in 1967, she studied at Brown University and participated in the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. Her paintings use grids, bright colour and household enamel, drawing on architectural patterns and the visual systems through which cities organise power and commerce.
Her moving-image work has explored places including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami and Beijing. Rather than functioning simply as city portraits, these films investigate the institutions, labour and public performances behind metropolitan life. Architecture and its surfaces recur across both parts of her practice.
