Luke Smalley

Luke Smalley (1955–2009) was an American photographer whose work explored adolescence, sport and the conventions of masculinity. He studied sports medicine and worked as a model and personal trainer before developing photographic projects in his home region of northwestern Pennsylvania.

Gymnasium drew on the visual language of exercise manuals and school athletics, staging familiar activities in unusual, sometimes surreal arrangements. British designer Kim Jones discovered the book and commissioned Smalley to photograph his first fashion collection, opening a further strand of commercial work. Smalley's other photographic books include Exercise at Home and Sunday Drive.
