Biography
Person.
Maurizio Cattelan is an Italian artist born in Padua in 1960. Working with sculpture, installation and publishing, he uses absurd situations and unsettling images to examine authority, social behaviour and the conventions of the art world. His exhibition Breath Ghosts Blind at Pirelli HangarBicocca in 2021 brought together works concerned with memory, life and death.
In 2010 he founded Toiletpaper with photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, following earlier publishing projects Permanent Food and Charley. The magazine dispenses with conventional written articles, using staged photographs and surreal tableaux to turn the visual polish of advertising and fashion towards stranger narratives.
