Biography
Person.
Marcel Dzama is a Canadian artist, born in Winnipeg in 1974, whose drawings combine human figures, animals and hybrid creatures in ambiguous scenes. He was a member of the Winnipeg collective the Royal Art Lodge and became known internationally during the late 1990s.
His ink and watercolour works often place their characters against spare backgrounds, drawing on folk art, childhood fantasy and the history of modern art. Dzama has extended this imagery into sculpture, costumes, installation and film, including Une danse des bouffons. Exhibitions have included Puppets, Pawns, and Prophets and Child of Midnight at David Zwirner in London.
