Biography
Person.
Peter Blake is an English artist and a central figure in British Pop Art. Born in Dartford in 1932, he studied at Gravesend School of Art and the Royal College of Art. His paintings, collages, prints and assemblages draw on popular music, celebrity images and everyday ephemera.
With Jann Haworth, he designed the cover of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), photographed by Michael Cooper. His Self-Portrait with Badges (1961), now at Tate, similarly brings the imagery of pop fandom into fine art.
