Biography
Person.
Marina Abramović is a performance artist born in Belgrade in 1946. After studying at the city's Academy of Fine Arts, she developed performances that used her own body to investigate endurance, vulnerability and the relationship between artist and audience. Her long collaboration with Ulay made physical and emotional interdependence a central subject.
In The Artist Is Present at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 2010, visitors sat opposite her in silence. Her work encompasses live actions, films, objects and methods for sustained attention; a major Royal Academy exhibition in London in 2023–24 brought that practice into the institution's main galleries.
