Joe Strummer

Joe Strummer was a singer, songwriter and musician best known for his work with the Clash. His songs addressed social injustice and political conflict, while the band’s records expanded from the urgency of their debut into the varied musical forms of London Calling, Sandinista! and Combat Rock.

Strummer also recorded with the 101ers, worked on film soundtracks and released music under his own name. His later group, the Mescaleros, made Rock Art and the X-Ray Style, Global a Go-Go and the posthumously completed Streetcore. Those recordings continued his interest in musical exchange, with Global a Go-Go drawing particularly on London’s multicultural life.
