Robert Erdmann is a fashion and portrait photographer whose name has also appeared in print as Robert Erdman. He worked as a stylist and as an assistant to Helmut Newton before developing his own photographic career.
His work for The Face belonged to the magazine’s expanding engagement with fashion photography during the 1980s. Later editorial commissions included Vogue, W, Elle and Marie Claire, with portrait subjects including Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie and Gwen Stefani. In 2013 he discussed his experience of working with Newton in the Annenberg Space for Photography’s Iris Nights lecture programme.
