Biography
Person.
Bill Henson is an Australian photographer, born in Melbourne in 1955. His work brings together figures, landscapes and ambiguous spaces, using deep shadow and carefully controlled colour to create images poised between observation and staging. Adolescence and the relationship between natural and constructed environments recur throughout his photographs.
Henson's work is held by institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. A major survey at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2005 examined three decades of his practice. His photographs connect the descriptive capacity of the camera with the atmosphere and formal organisation of painting.
