Biography
Person.
Fela Kuti (1938–1997) was a Nigerian bandleader, multi-instrumentalist and political activist who pioneered Afrobeat. After studying music in London and playing jazz and highlife, he developed a sound combining West African rhythms with jazz, soul and funk. Drummer Tony Allen was a crucial collaborator in shaping its rhythmic language.
With bands including Africa 70 and Egypt 80, Fela made extended, danceable music that challenged Nigeria’s military authorities. His Lagos venue, the Afrika Shrine, and communal home, Kalakuta Republic, became central to his musical and political life. His recordings continue to circulate through family-supported reissues.
