Biography
Person.
John Charles (1931–2004) was a Welsh footballer whose combination of size, technique and tactical intelligence made him world-class in two different positions and one of Britain’s most successful early football exports. Beginning with Leeds United as a centre-half, he proved equally devastating at centre-forward and helped take the club into the First Division before Juventus paid a British-record fee for him in 1957. In Turin Charles became known as Il Gigante Buono — the Gentle Giant — winning three Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia trophies while scoring 95 league goals in five seasons.
His power was matched by unusual discipline: his reputation rested on winning physical contests without the aggression commonly associated with them. Charles also won 38 caps for Wales and played at the 1958 World Cup, the country’s first appearance at the tournament.
