Hunter S. Thompson was an American journalist and author associated with gonzo journalism, a form of reporting in which the writer's own involvement becomes part of the story. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he wrote books including Hell's Angels, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.
A central collaboration began when he met the British artist Ralph Steadman while covering the Kentucky Derby for Scanlan's Monthly in 1970. Their combination of first-person reportage and abrasive drawing continued in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, initially serialised in Rolling Stone, and later projects including The Curse of Lono.
That partnership connects Thompson's American countercultural writing with British graphic satire. He died in 2005.
