Biography

Person.

Osamu Tezuka (1928–1989) was a Japanese manga artist, animator and producer whose extraordinary range and productivity helped establish many of the narrative, visual and industrial forms associated with postwar manga and television animation. Raised in Osaka and trained as a physician, Tezuka chose comics as his profession but carried questions of medicine, mortality and the value of life throughout works for children and adults.

Series including Astro Boy, Princess Knight, Phoenix and Black Jack expanded what sustained story manga could encompass, moving between science fiction, adventure, historical narrative, medical drama and philosophical allegory. Tezuka also transformed his publishing success into animation production: the 1963 Astro Boy television series was Japan’s first domestically produced weekly thirty-minute animated series and became an international broadcast success.
