Biography
Person.
Howard Chaykin is an American comics writer and artist whose career has repeatedly pushed popular genre material toward sharper political, sexual and formal territory. Beginning professionally in the early 1970s after working around artists including Gil Kane, Wally Wood and Neal Adams, he moved through sword-and-sorcery, science fiction and licensed comics before drawing Marvel’s first Star Wars adaptation in 1977.
In 1983 Chaykin created American Flagg!, a creator-driven science-fiction satire whose layered page design, media commentary and adult tone became one of the defining works of the early independent-comics boom. Later projects including Black Kiss, The Shadow, Blackhawk and Time2 continued his interest in pulp fiction, urban spectacle and compromised protagonists.
