Biography

Person.

Lee Miller was an American photographer whose work encompassed fashion, Surrealism and war reporting. After modelling in New York, she moved to Paris in 1929 to work with Man Ray, then established her own studio. Her photographs combined commercial portraiture with experiments in the studio and observations of everyday scenes.

Miller settled in London in 1939 and worked for Vogue. Accredited as a war correspondent, she followed Allied forces through Europe and photographed the liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau. After the war she continued making fashion and artist portraits. Her later life at Farleys in Sussex also included a sustained interest in inventive cooking.
