Biography
Person.
Cindy Sherman is an American artist known for staged photographs in which she assumes invented roles using costume, make-up and carefully constructed settings. Her work examines how identity is shaped by images from cinema, television, magazines and art history.
In Untitled Film Stills, made between 1977 and 1980, she adopted female roles recalling Hollywood, film noir and European cinema. Later series include history portraits that borrow from old-master painting and society portraits addressing age, appearance and status. The photographs use her image without functioning as straightforward autobiography.
