Biography

Person.

Thomas Degen is a photographer whose work spans fashion, portraiture and personal projects. He studied art history and philosophy at Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University and began assisting photographers in the 1970s. His subsequent editorial career included work for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and i-D.

Degen’s photographs have also circulated beyond magazines, appearing in exhibitions at institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His inclusion in the retrospective book Smile i-D places his work within the magazine’s early photographic history, when independent fashion publishing was developing a different vocabulary from the established glossies.
