Biography
Person.
Burning Spear is the performing name of Jamaican singer Winston Rodney, whose music is central to roots reggae. He began recording for Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd’s Studio One, releasing Door Peep Shall Not Enter in 1969. The name initially also identified a vocal group with Rupert Willington and Delroy Hinds.
His international breakthrough came with Marcus Garvey in 1975. Rastafarian thought, African history and self-reliance recur throughout his music. He later released records through Burning Music Productions, winning a Grammy for Jah Is Real and releasing No Destroyer in 2023.
