Biography
Person.
Geoffrey Beene (1927–2004) was an American fashion designer whose work combined precise construction with an increasing emphasis on comfort and movement. Born in Louisiana, he left medical studies for fashion, trained in New York and Paris, and launched his own label in 1963.
His early commissions included Lynda Bird Johnson’s wedding dress. During the 1970s he reconsidered the relationship between formal clothing and everyday life, developing lighter, more adaptable designs. His experimentation with shape and materials helped establish an approach to American fashion that balanced dressmaking technique with the freedom of sportswear.
