Biography
Person.
Barry Mitchell was a British comics artist whose career ranged across humour, adventure, romance and football strips before and alongside his work for 2000 AD. He contributed to the magazine from its earliest year, drawing M.A.C.H.1 and providing one of the first Judge Dredd-related covers, and later drew several Dredd stories including The Great Muldoon, Palais de Boing and The Psychos.
Mitchell came from a broader British comics tradition in which artists were expected to move rapidly between genres and publications, and much of his career lay outside the science-fiction material for which 2000 AD is now most widely remembered. His Judge Dredd episodes therefore preserve the meeting of two traditions: the established craft of postwar British weekly comics and the newer, more abrasive science-fiction language that 2000 AD was developing.
