Julien d'Ys

Julien d’Ys is a French hair artist whose work extends into painting, drawing and sculpture. Raised in Douarnenez in Brittany, he trained at Jean-Louis David’s Paris salon before working with photographers including Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Steven Meisel. His short haircut for Linda Evangelista became part of her transformation into a defining model of the period.

D’Ys has collaborated with designers including Rei Kawakubo, John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld and Azzedine Alaïa. He often builds hair forms from unexpected materials and develops jobs through illustrated notebooks. His paintings of models and these working books form a parallel record of his life in fashion.
