Biography
Person.
August Darnell is a musician, songwriter and producer best known through his stage persona Kid Creole. Born in the Bronx, he worked with Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band before forming Kid Creole and the Coconuts in 1980 with Adriana Kaegi and Coati Mundi.
The group combined dance music with theatrical performance, costumes and a deliberately cosmopolitan identity. Its 1982 album Tropical Gangsters, released in the United States as Wise Guy, included Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy, Stool Pigeon and I’m a Wonderful Thing, Baby. Darnell produced the album and wrote or co-wrote those three songs.
