Biography
Person.
Stephen Sprouse (1953–2004) was an American fashion designer and artist who brought the visual language of graffiti, punk and New York nightlife into luxury clothing. After working with Bill Blass and Halston, he launched his own collection in 1983, combining precise construction with fluorescent colour and handwritten patterns.
His creative circle included Debbie Harry, whom he dressed for Blondie performances, and Andy Warhol. Later projects ranged from clothing for Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman to graffiti-covered Louis Vuitton bags. His work connects the downtown music scene with the commercial spread of street imagery through fashion.
