Viviane Sassen

Viviane Sassen is a Dutch photographer whose work crosses fashion and fine art. Born in Amsterdam, she studied fashion design before turning to photography, developing an approach in which bodies, colour and shadow can become almost abstract forms.

Her images often use unexpected angles and perspectives that unsettle the viewer’s reading of a scene. The retrospective In and Out of Fashion brought together seventeen years of her fashion work and travelled from Amsterdam to venues including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Sassen has also exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Museum of Modern Art, maintaining a practice across commissioned images, books and gallery installations.
