Biography
Person.
Anton Furst (1944–1991) was a British production designer whose architectural imagination gave Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman one of the most influential cityscapes in modern popular cinema. Trained at the Royal College of Art, Furst moved through holography and special-effects work before becoming a production designer on films including The Company of Wolves and Full Metal Jacket.
For Batman he and set decorator Peter Young created a Gotham City that combined monumental modernism, industrial decay and oppressive vertical scale, turning the setting into an active expression of the film’s psychology rather than a neutral backdrop. The work won the Academy Award for art direction/set decoration and became deeply entangled with the visual identity of Batman across later media.
