Biography
Person.
Neil Franklin (1922–1996) was an English centre-half whose reputation among contemporaries rested on anticipation, technique and composure at a time when central defenders were still commonly judged first by strength and clearance. A Stoke City player, Franklin won 27 consecutive England caps between 1946 and 1950 and was widely regarded as one of the outstanding defenders of his generation.
His career then took an extraordinary turn when he left English football in 1950 for Independiente Santa Fe in Bogotá, Colombia, a move made outside the Football League’s contract system that caused controversy at home and removed him from England’s first World Cup campaign. The Colombian episode was brief, but it became inseparable from Franklin’s historical reputation, turning an elite international defender into a figure associated with football’s changing labour conditions as well as with sporting excellence.
