Biography
Person.
David Sims is a British photographer and director whose stripped-back, confrontational fashion images helped reshape magazine photography during the 1990s. Born in 1966, he emerged through a generation of British image-makers who rejected glossy perfection in favour of direct light, close crops, awkward energy and subjects who appeared less like remote ideals than people occupying the same physical space as the camera. Sims’s work for magazines and designers established a visual language that could be severe, intimate and deliberately unfinished, and his influence has extended through fashion editorials, advertising and moving image.
He has exhibited internationally, including at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and his photographs are held in collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris.
