Dapper Dan, born Daniel Day, is an American fashion designer associated with Harlem and the emergence of hip-hop style. He opened his Harlem boutique in 1982, adapting the visual language of luxury-brand logos into custom clothing worn by musicians and other public figures.
The original shop closed in 1992. A later partnership with Gucci began in 2017, reconnecting his bespoke practice with the fashion house whose imagery had featured in his earlier designs. In 2021, the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded him its lifetime achievement honour.
