Biography
Person.
Claire McCardell (1905–1958) was an American fashion designer associated with practical, mass-produced clothing. After studying at Parsons and spending time in Paris, she developed designs using materials such as cotton, denim and wool, with construction intended to allow flexibility and ease of wear.
Her designs included the belted Monastic dress and the Pop-over, introduced in 1942 through Townley Frocks. She also used fabrics associated with ordinary daywear in evening clothes, helping establish an approach to American fashion grounded in adaptable garments and accessible materials.
