Biography
Person.
Smiley Culture was the stage name of David Emmanuel, a South London singer and deejay whose records brought British Caribbean speech and experience into popular music. He developed his performance style through London sound systems, including Saxon, before reaching a wider audience with Cockney Translation and Police Officer in the mid-1980s.
His songs used humour and verbal dexterity to address language, identity and encounters with authority. He also hosted Channel 4’s Club Mix and performed So What in the film Absolute Beginners. His work connected sound-system culture with television, cinema and the emerging vocabulary of British rap. He died in 2011.
