Biography
Person.
Nobuyoshi Araki is a Japanese photographer born in Tokyo in 1940. His work joins intimate personal observation to photographs of urban life, flowers and the body. The photobook has been central to his practice: Sentimental Journey, published in 1971, established an approach he described as the “I-photograph”, drawing a connection with first-person literature.
Araki’s subsequent output has encompassed hundreds of publications and exhibitions internationally. Presentations include the Barbican’s Self, Life, Death in London in 2005 and Sentimental Journey 1971–2017– at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. His photographs repeatedly return to the relationship between private experience, desire, time and loss.
