Biography
Person.
Irvine Welsh is a Scottish novelist and screenwriter from Leith, Edinburgh. His first novel, Trainspotting, appeared in 1993 and reached a wider audience through Danny Boyle's film adaptation. Its use of local speech and its attention to life outside respectable society established concerns that recur across his writing.
His books include The Acid House, Marabou Stork Nightmares, Filth, Glue, Porno and Skagboys. He has also written for the stage, including You'll Have Had Your Hole, and worked across prose and screenwriting. Welsh's fiction combines abrasive humour, social observation and extreme situations, giving distinctive literary form to working-class voices and the pressures of friendship, addiction and aspiration.
