Biography
Person.
Riek Machar is a South Sudanese political leader who served as vice-president after independence in 2011, until his dismissal in 2013. He subsequently led the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition, becoming a central figure in the conflict and negotiations that followed the political rupture with President Salva Kiir.
In February 2020 he returned to government as first vice-president under a power-sharing settlement. He was also a principal subject of the 2014 documentary and magazine project Saving South Sudan, for which Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia travelled to meet him. That reporting situated him within the early crisis of the newly independent state.
