Biography

Person.

Gil Kane (1926–2000) was an American comics artist whose dynamic anatomy and sweeping page composition helped define the visual language of Silver Age superhero comics. Beginning professionally in the 1940s and working under several names before establishing himself as Gil Kane, he became especially associated with DC’s Green Lantern and The Atom, while his later Marvel work included Amazing Spider-Man and an extraordinary run as one of the company’s principal cover artists.

Kane’s figures appear to move through space with unusual force: foreshortened limbs, tilted bodies and dramatic low angles turn even conventional superhero action into something physically elastic and theatrical. His influence extended beyond individual titles through a career that crossed publishers and generations; he was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards Hall of Fame in 1997.
