Biography
Person.
Michael Haneke is an Austrian filmmaker whose dramas examine violence, social privilege and the responsibilities of spectatorship. Working primarily in German and French, he often uses interrupted narratives and unsettling shifts of perspective to make audiences question the images they are watching. His films include Funny Games, The Piano Teacher and Hidden.
He won the Cannes directing prize for Hidden in 2005 and the Palme d'Or for both The White Ribbon in 2009 and Amour in 2012. His work moves between political histories, family relationships and the concealed tensions beneath apparently comfortable lives.
