Biography

Person.

Afrika Bambaataa was a Bronx DJ and recording artist who helped establish early hip-hop culture and founded the Universal Zulu Nation. His eclectic selections brought funk, soul, rock and other sounds into hip-hop's developing musical vocabulary. Planet Rock, released in 1982, combined electronic instrumentation and Kraftwerk influences with rap, becoming an influential recording in electro and dance music.

His international performances helped spread hip-hop beyond New York. His later reputation was also shaped by allegations from men who said he had sexually abused them as children. He denied the allegations and left his leadership role in the Zulu Nation in 2016. His death was announced in April 2026.
