Biography
Person.
Paul Strand (1890–1976) was an American photographer and filmmaker central to the development of modernist photography. He studied with Lewis Hine in New York and exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz's gallery in 1916. His early work explored abstraction, street portraiture and the forms of natural and manufactured objects.
Strand later developed extended photographic studies of places and communities, travelling through Europe and Africa as well as the Americas. His photographs of the Outer Hebrides form a particularly significant connection with British documentary culture. Working across exhibitions, films and photographic essays, he treated the camera as a means of examining both visual form and the social character of a place.
