Biography
Person.
Ryszard Kapuściński (1932–2007) was a Polish reporter, writer, essayist and photographer whose books helped establish literary reportage as a major form of postwar European writing. Born in Pińsk, then in Poland and now in Belarus, he trained as a historian before becoming a foreign correspondent for the Polish Press Agency.
Over several decades he reported from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Soviet sphere, witnessing wars, coups, revolutions and the collapse of colonial rule. Books including The Emperor, Shah of Shahs, Another Day of Life, Imperium and The Shadow of the Sun transformed those experiences into compressed narratives about power, fear and historical change rather than conventional chronological news reporting.
