Biography
Person.
Jim W. Baker (James William Baker, 1891–1966) was Leeds United’s first club captain and one of the central players in the new club’s establishment during the early 1920s. A half-back who had previously played for Huddersfield Town, Baker followed manager Arthur Fairclough to Leeds in 1920 and became a model of consistency and leadership, completing a long sequence of consecutive League and cup appearances before injury finally interrupted it.
His most important season came in 1923–24, when he captained Leeds to the Second Division championship and the club’s first promotion to the top flight.
