Biography

Person.

Bobby Robson (1933–2009) was an English footballer and manager whose career connected postwar domestic football with the increasingly international game of the late twentieth century. As a player he represented Fulham and West Bromwich Albion and earned England caps, but his larger reputation was built in management. At Ipswich Town he transformed a provincial club into FA Cup winners in 1978 and UEFA Cup winners in 1981; as England manager he led the national side to the 1990 World Cup semi-final.

Robson later managed successfully in the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain before returning to his native north-east with Newcastle United. Admired for his warmth as well as his tactical and organisational abilities, he became one of English football’s most widely respected figures.
