Biography
Person.
Gary Oldman is a British actor, writer and director whose career has been defined by an unusual ability to disappear into characters while retaining a volatile physical intensity. Emerging from theatre and British television in the early 1980s, he established himself on film through roles including Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy, Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears and the football hooligan Bex in Alan Clarke’s The Firm.
Oldman later moved between independent cinema and large-scale international productions, playing figures as different as Lee Harvey Oswald, Dracula, George Smiley and Winston Churchill; the latter performance in Darkest Hour won the Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe for best actor. His only feature as writer-director, Nil by Mouth, drew on south London family experience and remains one of the most severe British dramas of the 1990s.
