Biography

Person.

Paul Smith is a British fashion designer and retailer whose career has turned traditional menswear into a long-running conversation between British tailoring, colour, humour and everyday observation. Born in Nottingham in 1946, Smith originally hoped to become a racing cyclist before injury redirected him toward fashion. He opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970 and presented his first menswear collection in Paris in 1976, gradually building a company whose clothes are known for adding unexpected detail to otherwise familiar forms.

Smith’s practice has always extended beyond garments into shop interiors, photography, graphic design, collecting and collaboration, helping make retail presentation itself part of the brand’s cultural language. His work has been recognised with honours including Royal Designer for Industry and a knighthood.
