Biography
Person.
Richard Prince is an American artist whose work examines how advertising and popular culture produce familiar images, desires and identities. He became known for photographing existing printed images, including the cowboys of Marlboro advertisements, and presenting them in new artistic contexts.
His practice also includes paintings based on jokes and paperback nurses, together with sculpture and collected materials. The Guggenheim’s 2007–08 retrospective Spiritual America surveyed these connected bodies of work. In Britain, his exhibition Continuation at the Serpentine in 2008 brought his treatment of photographs, painting and everyday objects to a major London public gallery.
