Biography
Person.
Matt Johnson is a musician, songwriter and the central figure behind The The. His early recording experiments developed alongside an apprenticeship at the De Wolfe music library in Soho. He formed The The in 1979 and released the solo album Burning Blue Soul before the group's breakthrough with Soul Mining in 1983.
The albums Infected, Mind Bomb and Dusk combined pop songwriting with political unease and personal reflection. Collaborators included Johnny Marr, James Eller and David Palmer. Johnson's work has continued across recordings, performances and film music, retaining The The as the principal vehicle for his songs.
