Biography
Person.
Linford Christie is a British former sprinter and coach whose 100-metre career made him one of the defining figures in British athletics from the mid-1980s through the early 1990s. Born in Jamaica in 1960 and raised in Britain from childhood, Christie developed relatively late by elite sprinting standards but became the first British man to win 100-metre titles at the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.
His greatest public moment came at Barcelona in 1992, where at the age of thirty-two he won Olympic 100-metre gold; the following year he added the world title in Stuttgart. Christie’s success helped establish a visible lineage of elite British sprinting that he later extended through coaching.
