Biography
Person.
Matthew Barney is an American artist who works across film, performance, sculpture and drawing. His early Drawing Restraint projects used physical obstacles and athletic exertion as conditions for making art. The five films of The Cremaster Cycle, developed between 1994 and 2002, built elaborate worlds from bodily processes, mythology and biography.
Later projects include River of Fundament, made with composer Jonathan Bepler, and Redoubt, set in Idaho's wilderness. His exhibitions bring films together with the sculptures and materials connected to their production; Redoubt was shown at London's Hayward Gallery in 2021.
