Biography

Person.

Tom DiCillo is an American filmmaker who studied film at New York University and worked as a cinematographer before directing his own features. His early camera work included Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise, a formative film in American independent cinema.

DiCillo’s debut feature, Johnny Suede, starred Brad Pitt and Catherine Keener and won the top prize at Locarno. Living in Oblivion, with Steve Buscemi, turned the frustrations of low-budget filmmaking into comedy and won a screenwriting award at Sundance. Later films include Box of Moonlight and Delirious. His work frequently centres on performers and outsiders negotiating the distance between their ambitions and everyday circumstances.
