Lars von Trier is a Danish filmmaker who studied at the National Film School of Denmark and made his feature debut with The Element of Crime in 1984. He co-founded the production company Zentropa with Peter Aalbæk Jensen and was one of the filmmakers behind Dogme 95, the movement that proposed restrictions on conventional film production.
His films include Europa, Breaking the Waves, The Idiots and Dancer in the Dark, which won the Palme d'Or in 2000. Later work includes Dogville, Melancholia and Nymphomaniac. Across changing styles, his cinema has repeatedly used formal experiments to challenge familiar ways of telling and staging a story.
