Biography
Person.
Li Wei is a Chinese artist who works through performance and photography. After studying oil painting, he moved to Beijing in 1993 and encountered the city's performance-art scene. His photographs often show bodies apparently suspended, falling or held in impossible positions within urban spaces.
These images begin with staged physical actions and support systems, with wires or ropes removed from the final photograph. Li has described photography as the medium through which a performance is carried forward. His work has been exhibited internationally, including a survey at Lucca Photo Fest, and was presented in Dazed's London Chinatown programme for Chinese New Year in 2010.
